How do you build a website using ChatGPT?
Use ChatGPT to turn a brief into a page plan, draft copy and website code, then review the files in a browser and publish them on suitable hosting. Start small, test each change, and verify forms and integrations separately. Generating a page does not by itself create a working business service.
1. Write the brief
Specify your audience, the action visitors should take, required pages, brand colors, approved images and real business information. For a store, identify product, checkout and order-management requirements before asking for the design.
2. Ask for a plan and first page
Create a responsive website for a local bakery with Home, Menu and Contact pages. First propose the page structure and ask for missing business details. Then provide semantic HTML and CSS for the homepage, with accessible navigation, one H1, descriptive image placeholders and a clear contact link. Do not invent customer reviews, addresses or business claims.
3. Save and preview the files
Save code into the file names the response specifies, preserving relative paths. For plain HTML and CSS, open the homepage in a browser. For a framework project, follow its package and preview instructions. If something fails, share the exact error and relevant code rather than asking for a complete rewrite.
4. Refine one task at a time
Ask for a specific change: Make the menu usable on a narrow phone, keep keyboard focus visible, and explain which files changed. Recheck the other pages after a shared style or navigation change. Never put API secrets into browser-delivered JavaScript.
5. Test and publish
- Check headings, page titles, descriptions and canonical URLs.
- Test navigation and images on mobile and desktop.
- Connect forms to a real service and verify delivery without exposing credentials.
- Use a payment provider for checkout rather than trusting generated browser logic with payment confirmation.
- Deploy to hosting appropriate for the generated files, enable HTTPS, and test the live site.
- Publish a sitemap for public pages and keep account and private project URLs excluded.
Using WebMins instead of assembling files
If you prefer a visual starting point, browse WebMins templates, create a project and configure an available AI connection. Review the provider account and API billing requirements before generating. Using OpenAI through an API connection is a different workflow from chatting in ChatGPT.
